If this is your first time in Asunción, the first thing you should do is see the historic center: the Pantheon of Heroes, Palma Street, the House of Independence, the Cathedral, the Asunción City Hall, the Congress, the Juan Sinforiano Bogarín Museum, the López Palace, and the Recova.
All of this will give you historical information about the city of Asunción throughout its different eras. You’ll be able to see the architectural styles that distinguish this city from others, enjoy the friendliness of the Asunción people by sitting on the terraces of bars, and experience how people live here.
On Palma Street, for example, on Saturdays, there’s usually a food, cultural, and music fair that livens up the atmosphere. The same thing happens at the Puerto Cultural Center, so it might be a good idea to go that day to explore the area and catch a beautiful sunset.
If you’re looking for a glimpse into local culture, you can visit the Museo del Barro (Clay Museum), with a very interesting permanent collection showcasing all of Paraguay’s art, both that of indigenous peoples and folk artisans.
The Ethnographic Museum is another great idea, where you can learn about the richness and variety of indigenous peoples that still exist in Paraguay today. Or the Museo de Arte Sacro (Museum of Sacred Art), a small gem located next to the Antequera Steps. The Centro Cultural de España (Spanish Cultural Center) is also a great option, where, in addition to seeing a very important Latin American ceramic collection, you can also enjoy its patio, concerts, and free cinema.
If you’re more into sports, you can go for a run along one of the waterfront promenades, the riverside paths that run parallel to the river. Guazú Metropolitan Park is another option, as is Ñu Guasú, another huge park located between Asunción and Luque. If you prefer something more central and no less beautiful, go to Parque de la Salud, but don’t forget your ID, as the latter requires it for entry.
When running during the week, it’s best to avoid dusk to avoid problems, especially on the waterfront. Going out at that time doesn’t guarantee you’ll be robbed, but it’s always best to be alert and avoid displaying valuables in broad daylight.
If you’d like to attend mass or see religious buildings, you can do so at historic churches such as the Cathedral, the Santísima Trinidad, the Iglesia de la Encarnación, or the Recoleta. The latter is located next to a cemetery of the same name, where the remains of some historical figures from Paraguay’s history, such as Madame Lynch, are found.
As you know, for shopping, you have the shopping malls, whose areas are pleasant and green: such as Paseo la Galería, Shopping del Sol, or Shopping Mariscal, where the Mariscal neighborhood is located, with many terraces where you can enjoy the current good weather.
If you’re here on business, don’t forget Expo Mariano, Paraguay’s most important exposition. It takes place only once a year and has entertainment for everyone.
