Of all its neighboring countries, Paraguay is the least dangerous: Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Brazil.
The majority of Paraguay’s current population is of mixed race and Spanish ascendent. Unlike other countries, there was racial mixing.
The Italian diaspora at the beginning of the 20th century means that today, 40% of the population has Italian surnames.
Paraguay has its own mythology (like Greek and Roman mythology).
In addition to guaraní, other native languages are used by Paraguay’s different ethnic groups (tribes). Guaraní is to the indigenous people what English is to you when speaking internationally.
Who’s behind all this?
Don’t even think about leaving the house on foot! Are you crazy to go to the supermarket alone? With that foreign face, aren’t you afraid?
These and many others were the warnings I heard for years in Paraguay. My defence mechanism was to act like a foreigner and continue living in the country the way I wanted. They called me crazy, yes, but today, I’m convinced that Paraguay deserves less fear, more life on the streets, and, of course, quality tourists who care for the environment.
My name is Rosa Grimaldi, and I have to confess that I didn’t want to live in Paraguay, but—out of love—I accepted. We left vibrant Barcelona for an Asunción that called to me, but that seemed like it would curtail my freedom. After a six-year stint here and another six years of expatriation to Belgium, here I am as an ambassador for this country that never ceases to amaze me.
